One night last month a bear discovered the bird feeders that we had recently put out, and successfully pulled them to the ground. Now every evening and in the early mornings, I perform the daily ritual of taking down and putting up the feeders. It's dark and often chilly, but I've enjoyed these brief times of being outside in the quiet hours. Sometimes I wonder if I should be making noise and saying out loud, "Hey bear, I'm here, bear." I read someplace that they'd prefer not be surprised.
