about

Gaudete (performed by the Florence G. Renfaire Memorial Civic Wind Band)

Florence Renfaire (née Gazebo) was a lifelong supporter of the local arts, with a particular fondness for civic wind ensembles and obscure Christmas carols of indeterminate age and origin. We of the FRMCWB hope she would have enjoyed our modest offering of one of her favorite Yuletide tunes. Sadly Florence is no longer with us; she's fine, she just left the country and moved onto a narrowboat owned by her mentor, musicologist Dr. Nancy Steinmetz, who sent us these words about the music:

"*Gaudete’s* first known appearance in musical notation came in 1582, in *Piae Cantiones*, a Finnish collection of mostly sacred songs. That first edition only had a melody for the chorus; traditionally the verse is sung to an older liturgical tune. It could be that both melodies have much older, even pre-liturgical, roots." - Prof. N.S. Ph.D.
